Mayi Boston, who is a member of a sub-committee of a local brewers asso- ciation in Mitundu, said that she is now manager of the brewing business that was started by her parents – now dead.
My parents started the business and from it they managed to support my education up to Form Four.
I decided to keep on with the business so that I support my children who are in school,” she said.
According to Mayi Boston, at their meetings – as brewers – they discuss among others issues on how they can keep minors from drinking.
“We were told [by MAGGA] that we can only sell to those that are 18 years and above, so when those we think are minors come we tell them to go away and if possible also advise them on the evils of drinking at their age,” said Mayi Boston.
She said as brewers they do not see it as a loss for their businesses.
“It is important for the children because it is like we are helping them build their fu- ture. Beer is bad at their age because once they are intoxicated they can be led to engage into a number of immoral acts such as unprotected sex which can negatively impact on their futures,” she said.
