Accessing age-appropriate and culturally sensitive Sexual and Reproductive health information is everyone's right. In this period of COVID19 pandemic, adolescents need to be equipped with essential knowledge on SRHR hence creating demand for YFHSs and enhancing their Life Skills to overcome COVID19 related forms of violence such as forced marriages.
From 16th to 20th August, MAGGA, with financial and Technical support from NCA and DCA, under Ending Violence Against Women and Girls (EVAWG) project, engaged Head Teachers from 10 Educational zones in Dowa on how they can promote Youths' access to SRHR and CSE information. The meetings were conducted in collaboration with Dowa DHO, Social welfare office and Gender office to enhance coordination between school authorities and healthy facilities in their localities in ensuring that adolescent girls and boys in their schools are accessing SRH information through YFHS centres while also observing all COVID 19 preventive measures.
During the meetings, all COVID19 related issues that have affected adolescent girls and boys in schools were discussed. Furthermore, issues that are hindering the promotion of SRHR were also discussed. By the end of the meetings, Head Teachers brainstormed strategies that they can use to ensure that in-school adolescents are being equipped with relevant SRHR information that foster their skills in overcoming all sexual related challenges they face during adolescence hence enabling them to make right decisions in life.
These meetings will help the Head Teachers to be accountable in creating demand for YFHS amongst adolescents in their schools and enhancing their skills in overcoming all forms of violence.
