UNFPA in collaboration with Malawi Girls Guides Association (MAGGA) is implementing the Action for Adolescent Girls project in Chikwawa and Mangochi districts with financial support from the UN Foundation. The project has invested in girls’ education through distribution of push bicycles to 880 marginalized adolescent girls in 30 primary schools in the 2 target districts of Chikwawa and Mangochi. In addition to the girl learners, 40 push bikes have also been provided to mother groups to facilitate their mobility in following up girls that have been consistently missing classes and those that have actually dropped out from school due to several factors. Furthermore, 40 community based distribution agents within the communities surrounding the beneficiary schools have also been equipped with push bikes so that they are able to cover a wider catchment area in providing SRH information and services to young people particularly girls. The project implementation period for the project commenced in July 2018 and will run for 18 months up to 31 December 2020. The success of the project will be assessed based on the achievement of the following outcomes:
- Improvement in school attendance of the beneficiary girls;
- Improvement in academic performance of the beneficiaries of the bicycles;
- Reduction in school dropout of the beneficiaries by 80%;
- Reduction or zero pregnancies for the beneficiaries of the bicycles;
- Increase in the number of young people reached by community based distribution agents with SRH information and services;
- Increase in the number of school dropout girls followed up and mobilized by mother groups to return to school.
